My nephew, Phillip was teaching me how to use his bow and arrow last week. He can hit a bullseye. I missed the broadside of a barn. He hit a Coke can. I shot the arrow over the hill. He has finesse. I popped myself hard in the nose when I released the string. He is a patient teacher and I enjoyed shooting with him.
New Years Resolutions are about hitting the mark as you begin another year. Like an arrow time quickly flies. Whether or not you hit the bullseye or you live like an errant arrow depends upon what you are aiming for, your discipline, coach, and passion for what you are living for.
My bullseye has been for many years 1 Corinthians 10:31 “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (NLT)
When I do my end of the year review I can see progress and areas that need attention and improvement. It doesn’t help my family, church or community if I allow the areas that need attention to depress me. Personally, I really struggle with that. It means getting on my knees before God, casting my cares upon him, and praying for the breath of his Holy Spirit to breathe life into me. Then rising with new resolve. Actually I have to do this throughout the year.
This passage from 2 Thessalonians helps and encourages me.
To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12, ESV
Resolved to live my life for the glory of God with gratitude and love for Becky, our children, families, the congregation and community I serve.
Tomorrow the process I use.
Love and Peace in Christ!
