“So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.” (John 8:36, NLT)
“Freedom is only part of the story and half the truth …. That is why I recommend that the Statue of Liberty on the East Coast be supplemented by a Statue of Responsibility on the West Coast.” Victor Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning
“But you, Timothy, are a man of God; so run from all these evil things. Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.” (1 Timothy 6:11, NLT)
Just doing some thinking after scanning the newspaper tonight. Our greatest ability is our responsibility. We possess the ability to choose how we will respond to our opportunities and challenges. I agree with Jesus and Victor Frankl. Jesus sets us free and we are responsible to pursue a godly life of faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness will nurture that freedom. This is very similar to the fruit of the Spirit that Paul writes about in Galatians 5:22-23.
Think of the list like this. Righteousness is seeking the presence of God. Godliness is seeking to grow in that relationship. Faith is living out that relationship with God daily. Love is a commitment to do good to others. Perseverance is straight up courage to live a godly life. Gentleness is strength under control. The Good News is that the Holy Spirit, who lives within us, helps us live this out daily. See 2 Corinthians 3:18, Ephesians 3:16-19. That pretty well describes a responsible life and society.
Peace!
