Charles Spurgeon quoted Cicero, “Friendship is the only thing in the world concerning the usefulness of which all mankind are agreed.” Friends are a necessary gift and blessing to all us. Therefore it becomes important for us to understand the power of friendship. It begins with choice.
- Friends choose one another.
- Siblings don’t choose one another.
- Friends enjoy one another’s company.
- Sometimes siblings don’t get along at all.
Jesus chose us as his friends.“You are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. You didn’t choose me. I chose you.” (John 15:14, NLT) If you are like me you wonder why would He ever choose me as His friend. (I’m smiling with a deep joy writing this.) He is known as the “friend of sinners.” In Christ we see the fulness of God! God’s love and friendship extended to all who believe and trust in Him.
It is an absolutely stunning passage in Scripture that “The Lord God walking about in the garden.” He was seeking the fellowship of Adam and Eve, calling out to them. God wanted their fellowship. God is personal and loving God extending grace and friendship to us.
Do you know that God loves you?
Do you know that God has chosen you in Christ for friendship?
Are you a friend of Christ?
Tomorrow, teaching our children how to choose friends.
Peace!
Now this makes me want to add Israel Houghton’s “Friend of God” to the next worship set!! Great read!!
