““When you fasted and mourned in the summer and in early autumn, was it really for me that you were fasting?” (Zechariah 7:5, NLT)
To me this is one of the more interesting questions about fasting. Why do we fast? It’s like everything else we do as passionate followers of Christ, it’s all about Him! Fasting is our way of taking our faith in God, our faithfulness to God in response to Him and the situations we see around us. Amazingly while we fast we sense God’s response to the situation as well. Read verses 9-10.
““This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to one another. Do not oppress widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against each other.” (Zechariah 7:9–10, NLT)
Remember how Christ showed mercy, set captives free, his kindness was manifested to those government and religious rejected. No wonder the lame leaped and the blind saw, God responded to their poverty, sin, sickness and faith with grace mercy. His response as one biblical writer said was to go about doing good!
Imagine what God will do in us as we fast not to get something from Him but allow Him to continue to mold us in the image of Christ together.
Peace
