When President Regan nominated Sandra Day O’Conner to the Supreme Court I had an interesting conversation with a good friend. He had successfully built several business across the Southeastern United States. He was new Dad. For the first time he was interested in the Judicial Branch of our government. Why? Because the interpretation of our Constitution affected his family, our community and the “Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity…”
We sat by his pool and I laughed when he said the only Justice’s name I know, is Oliver Wendall Holmes. Justice Holmes had been dead then 45 years! Now he’s interested and rightly so.
Are you interested in Ms. Kagan’s nomination? Who is she? What does she believe? Is she conservative, liberal, progressive? It really does matter, to us and to our children.
I think Peggy Noonan’s article sum’s up the question nicely. “The Supreme is our great interpreter of the law and our Constitution. It would be nice if Ms. Kagan were given the opportunity and responsibility to answer tough, clear, direct questions. But that would require Senators able and willing to ask them.”
