Heaven is a Promise

One night my grandson came to my bedside and hugged me goodnight. He said, “Papa, I asked Jesus to let you come see me. And he did!” It’s a moment that I will treasure. First, because he prayed. Second, because his faith grew. Third, because of his love.

Later that week, we went for a walk and he pointed out a house and said, “I want you to live there!” “Why,” I asked him? “So I can come see you everyday,” he said. He wanted a promise that I would. I could not make that promise. I assured him, that as much as it lies possible with me, I will always be there for him. It’s a promise with a condition, as much as possible, that I will keep.

Heaven is an unconditional promise that God makes to those who love and serve him.

“When everything is ready; I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.” John 14:3

One of God’s greatest promises to us is the promise of Heaven. It is good for us to think often and much about our future destiny reserved for those who serve the Lord Jesus Christ. When I think about heaven, I think of seeing Jesus and falling at his feet in gratitude. No one but Him could save me from my sin. His amazing love and grace enthrall me. I look forward to talking to my Dad and remembering the grace of God that came to our family. I also want to talk to Moses, Elijah, David, Peter, Paul, and Mary! I want to meet John Wesley, Martin Luther, Huldrych Zwingli, John Calvin, Billy Graham, David DuPlessis and Martyn Lloyd-Jones.

I look forward to eating foods that I love here and experiencing flavors that have been tasted since Eden. I look forward to seeing the mountains, valleys, and animals like they haven’t been since Eden. The Bible tells us that all of creation is groaning. There is a reason that all of creation anticipates! It brings joy to think it. Imagine extinct fruit we have never tasted. Sweet peaches fresh off the tree. I will be able eat grapefruit! Will we see animals that are extinct? We don’t have to fear a Jurassic Park scenario because there will be no more death. Imagine riding a dinosaur. Imagine seeing a earth without pollution, swamps (natures sewage and sanitation system), is it possible that some animals will talk? Remember Balaam’s Donkey?

“The created world itself can hardly wait for what’s coming next. Everything in creation is being more or less held back. God reins it in until both creation and all the creatures are ready and can be released at the same moment into the glorious times ahead. Meanwhile, the joyful anticipation deepens.” Romans 8:19-21, Message

Each day, we having a near death experience. Think about for a moment driving 60 mph toward another vehicle coming towards you at 60 mph. The driver is perhaps texting and veers over the line. We live with this reality every day. For you or me, we could be in present heaven before this day is over. Past generations of Christians thought, talked, and sang often about heaven. Perhaps we should too. We will find great joy and motivation for life if we do!

  1. Dear Pastor Dennis,
Interesting thoughts you have about heaven. My scenario is recovering my love ones and being a family again without friction ,pain or tears. Just pure love and harmony 💕 In my heart heaven will be a new home with our loving father Jesus Christ.
