My hero, happens to also be my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! I’ve learned so much about confident living from serving him. There are certain blessings God gives us, for instance salvation, forgiveness of our sins, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Then there are blessings that we receive conditionally as we serve Christ. He gives us an intimate invitation to abide in him and he will abide in us. The quality of life we enjoy depends upon our willingness to learn from him and apply those life lessons. Salvation is immediate; sanctification is ongoing. Think of sanctification as growing in the abundant life God gives us.
What does this have to do with Jesus’ grit? I use an acronym for grit: Guts, Resiliency, Integrity, Tenacious.
Guts or courage comes from knowing who you are! Jesus was never in any doubt about who he was. When others doubted him, including his family, he remained true to who he was. Yes, he was the son of God. He publicly proclaimed that. He also admittedly was humble and gentle (Matthew 11:29), kind to others (Mathew 20:15), compassionate (Mark 1:41), willing to suffer bitterly for us (Matthew 20:22).
The word grit is not in the Bible but words like resilient and steadfast are. Facing crucifixion “…Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.” It wasn’t just his divinity but by becoming man, he shows us what we were created to be. Strong, courageous, gutsy, and kind, gentle, compassionate and willing to suffer for others. He knew who he was. He knew that God the Father was pleased with him!
His courage or guts were demonstrated in humbling himself to enter into our world of brokenness, share our humanity, heal our diseases, die in our place for our sins, in order to save us. He knew that he would be rejected and despised. He wasn’t a disappointed utopian. He knew what it would take to save all who would believe in him.
Do you know that God loves you? He will forgive your sins and give you a new life if you trust him to.
Do you know who you are in Christ?
Do you know that God has a purpose for your life? Do you know what that is?
Do you have the guts to be all that Christ has called you to be?
Do you know that God takes pleasure in you?
