“I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14
Fearfully and wonderfully made. Those words should leave us in awe. Awe is that deep, humbling awareness that we are standing before something far greater than ourselves—something so wondrous it quiets us, and so holy it commands reverence.
There is a mystery in the creation of every human being that is known fully only to God, our Creator. Each person bears His image. Each life is His workmanship. As C. S. Lewis observed, when you encounter another human being, you are encountering a miracle.
That is why the recent, disgusting post on President Trump’s social media site, directed at former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama, is indefensible and reprehensible. It degrades not only the people it targets, but the moral fabric of our nation.
Racism stands in direct contradiction to the truth of Scripture and the heart of God. When we demean another person, we deny the wonder of God’s creation and forget who we are called to be. I feel a deep sense of shame over this moment—and a renewed resolve to speak, live, and love in a way that honors the God who fearfully and wonderfully made us all.
Peace!
